Write on!

My oh my, I've been a writing machine lately (which has certainly slowed me down on writing our blog!). I'm currently doing a lot of PR work for a local chef/restaurant (Bayport Cookery--awesome! See earlier blog...). I'm writing a food column 2x/month for a local paper, writing press releases and newsletters (for BC and other clients, too). When it rains it pours, and I do love a shower of writing. It's a good stress for me and so far, so good. It's a fun change of pace and I can't wait to see what happens as a result.

But, onto the ribclan weekend...one that was full of celebration. Wedding anniversaries. Tooth Fairies. Memorable exclamations. Gee, where to start? Tooth fairies or memorable exclamations--ahhh, lucky for you, they go together.

It all began Friday night, as ribB and myself worked hard at convincing Kdee to let us pull out her dangling top, front tooth. As you're probably imagining, it was gross--hanging crooked and so loose that when you touched it, your stomach flipped a bit. Her first 2 teeth came out easily & without debate, but for reasons unknown, she was adamant that no one touch this tooth (except for Uncle Bart, whom we weren't going to see). Well, whining and drama get under our skin--FAST. We tried to be patient, we tried to be fun, but it was all in vain and we were fed up. Imagine then, the humor of hearing ribB sternly tell Kdee, "GIVE ME THAT TOOTH!!!!!". As you'd expect, that didn't work and our efforts ended with putting her to bed. And dreaming of our date the next night....ahhh, sweet relief was coming! (ribB did enjoy a night of cards with the guys later...a much needed break for him!)

Saturday began with ribB and Kdee going out for breakfast (to get me a Anniversary card & earrings picked out by Kdee--thank you ribB for directing her away from the heart ones!). Kdee, though, was worried--"Are you taking me to the Dentist?" she nervously asked ribB. Too funny...but it still didn't stop her from being stubborn about pulling it. Dang. Around 3pm our awesome babysitter, Anne, came. She's a college student who is so great with the kids. Really plays and interacts with them (aka, doesn't just sit them in front of the TV like a lot of sitters). Kdee really likes her, so she was very excited for her to come. Needless to say, so were we (especially since she was staying until midnight--what a joy!). We had a great anniversary night filled with golfing 9 holes (we both played poorly, but our balls kept landing together--we think it was an anniversary tribute) and dinner at the Bayport Cookery. At the Cookery, we had a 5 course meal with wine pairings. It took 3.5 hours and was, in ribB's words, "the best food I've ever had". It was amazing. We really, really enjoyed being able to eat so leisurely, as well as having the chance to savor our food. As many of you know, eating dinner with little children often means you eat fast and shovel furiously! What a treat it was. (If you're curious what we ate, go to www.bayportcookery.com and check out the current menu for an idea.) An even bigger treat was that the chef/owner (Jim Kyndberg) didn't charge us for our meal! Completely unexpected and unnecessary, but very, very nice. With such a nice time, we actually went home a bit early (ok, 11pm), it was tough to top such a good time.

Sunday was filled with hanging out and playing together...and a certain little tooth getting pulled out! That's right. Kdee actually pulled her tooth out by herself and she GLOWED with pride afterward. She initially was going to resist any "tooth talk", but when I told her that we couldn't do any experiments (aka mixing lots of weird stuff in the kitchen), she was motivated into action. In the end, it really was fun to have her do it herself and I'm glad that it worked out that way.The kids and I went to Kdee's school playground for a bit to get some energy out, ribB shot his bow and planted the apple tree that I gave him for our anniversary. We also enjoyed some water/outside time...the weather was just too nice to be inside! Later, I was lucky enough to have another little break away and had dinner with my good friend, Susan. As always, I had an awesome time with her and really enjoyed our conversations. Later, the tooth fairy came to our house that night--leaving a whole $1.25...up a quarter from the last tooth (pulling it yourself has rewards). Tooth fairy rates are ridiculous these days--some kids get a dollar per what number tooth it is (i.e, after you've lost your 5th tooth, you get $5!). Not us. We give her 5 quarters and the quantity is what gets her excited. We figure we have to take advantage of this time where she thinks $1.25 is a lot of money! :-)

Our week has gone pretty well so far. Kdee was a bit sick or going through growing pains on Tuesday (she was in bed by 5:45pm!) and was full of energy again on Wednesday. I woke up today with pink eye, with no knowledge of how I got it. It's weird to have an "illness" that I haven't had since I was 8 or 9. (To anyone who's seeing me soon, no need to worry--I've been to the Dr. and have the eye drops that make me noncontagious within 24 hrs, if not sooner!) My mom is babysitting for us tonight (I swear I won't touch anyone during my time out!)--we can't believe our good fortune of 2 dates within a week. Fun! Fun! Fun! This weekend we're getting together with our good (& very fun) college friends at a parent's house in Southern WI (this house is like Better Homes and Gardens, so it truly is a retreat!). We can't wait.

It's almost Friday everyone...get excited for the weekend!

What? More photos you say? Well, here you go...

A fun weekend requires lots of photo taking. Here are a few more, in whatever random order this blog site puts them in!

1) Kdee and Dylan building their "island"...surely no one will escape!

2) Peek-a-boo with Kirsten (in hat)

3) Brooklyn surveying the "fish-ees! fish-ees!" with a cautious eye...

4) ribB and little B going for a spin on Grandma/Grandpa's jet ski ("GO!!!!")

Now, back to that margarita... :-)!

Summer heats up...

Whew! It's been another busy week in the Ribclan family. Last weekend we headed up north for another stay at the ribclan family cabin. We were excited to see our (Great) Grandpa R, who spent a nice week at the cabin with our Aunt Barb & Uncle Tim. He really loves being at this special place, especially as his trips become more few. He was in very good spirits and was excited to see the kids. Little B even pushed his wheelchair in a circle, (inside the cabin)! Quite a feat if you ask us. We had a nice time catching up with Barb, Tim & Grandpa before they left on Saturday (staying long enough to see us, which was nice).

Saturday evening was another exciting adventure with Bart, Donna, Blender Boy, Rose and another favorite friend--Murray! We haven't seen Murray in some time, and it's always awesome to spend time with him. This Irish lad is full of...fun, an understatement if you saw the sparkle in his eyes. As you'd expect, Blender Boy was whipping up some concoctions, but this time I added a recipe in the mix. I've posted the well received "Watermelon Margarita" recipe here for your enjoyment...perfect for a hot summer day. During my assistance, I was labeled "Garnish Girl", a title I'm proud of. Later that evening, Cookie, Louie and their visiting daughter, Julie, joined in the fun. There wasn't a shortage of stories, especially as Bart, Carl (blender boy) and Murray recalled many (crazy) stories of their youth. All I can say is that if I tried to pull off as many stunts as they did, I would have gotten into a lot of trouble. Luckily for them, they all have very sweet, innocent-looking faces that seemed to deceive their family and friends during those antics.

On Sunday, ribB's parents, sisters and children joined in on the cabin fun. (Backnote: ribB is the oldest of 3 children. Christina is 5 years younger and Chandra is 10 years younger; Christina has 3 children (Dylan (5), Brooklyn (2) and Kirsten (8 months); Chandra is engaged to Matt with 3 furry (cat) children: Wrigley, Gizmo and Reggie). We enjoyed LOTS and LOTS of swimming (especially since temps were in the high 90's!). Dylan recently broke his arm (even undergoing surgery for pins, etc.--very brave!) and was a very good sport about keeping it wrapped & dry while playing up on the beach. Kdee loves playing with Dylan ("DD") and they have so much fun together. This visit included making an "island" in the sand, forts in the cabin and eating like dinosaurs, to name a few activities. Brooklyn enjoyed a love-hate relationship with the baby fish swimming up near the beach. She has the best voice/quirky sounds that just crack me up. Kirsten looks like a doll and has a very relaxed, sweet disposition. Chandra joined in on the fun after her big move from Iowa to Illinois, where her fiance' is going to graduate school. Her move literally happened the day before, with her parents helping her out. The fact that they all made it to the cabin at all is impressive!

A couple of highlights (in my book) were: 1) hearing Kdee and Dylan giggling/laughing from across the lake while fishing with ribB and grandpa; 2) the ladies cooling off in the lake & chatting while the kids/guys were fishing; 3) family chat time later that evening--a first in a long time without children (who were sleeping) and the fact that we were all together! It was a pleasure to talk without distractions and really enjoy the company of family; 4) WATERSKIING! Even Grandma waterskiied, which...truth be told, she did better than me! Everyone but Grandpa, Kdee, Dylan and the little ones waterskiied. Pretty impressive!; 5) watching Kdee swim. Part of the reason she didn't ski was because she was too busy swimming. She improved on her ability to swim underwater ("I did a somersault in the water!") so much that she swam herself out of energy on Monday, before we left. She literally fell asleep within 5 minutes of leaving the cabin--a first for any road trip since she was a baby. I also had a blast "throwing" her in the water and playing with her. It reminded me a lot of my dad, who used to do this stuff with me when I was little, which makes for some of my favorite memories of him.; 6) little B wanting to constantly "GO!!!" on the boat to fish with dad, as well as on the jet ski (which he loved). He started his request to "go" early each morning; 7) little B during the drive home...he was downright silly. He had a 3.5 hr nap that day (ahhh, cabin air and lake water mix well for long naps!) and was not about to fall asleep anytime soon. He had ribB and me in stitches for a good 1.5 hr of our drive home.

(On a side note: little B is now obsessed with his dad. It's "daddy" everything...I'm even being refused kisses and attention, as he seeks "daddy" out. Does this child not realize all that I endured to bring him into this world!?! I suspect not. Of course, ribB thinks this is great--especially since ribB put up with being called "mama" for, oh, a few months. I suppose it's my turn (and ribB assured me that the 6 months goes by quickly...)

This weekend we'll be celebrating our 11th wedding anniversary...wow, where does the time go? We've hired a babysitter from 3-midnight, which is the biggest chunk of time that we've had alone since March (ironically, that was also the last time that this babysitter was over!). Needless to say, we're super excited! We've got some fun plans in the works and, oh, did I mention we're excited? I can honestly say that the time has gone by easily and quickly (not without some effort, mind you!). I am lucky to have found a partner who is fun, kind and supportive (and a great dad on top of all that!). I admire him even more today than "way back then".

Have a great weekend...enjoy the pics and, of course, some tasty margaritas!
Pictures (in no particular order): 1) us with (great) Grandpa R; 2) Blender Boy serves Murray while wearing his "super hero" uniform (minus cape); 3) everyone captivated by Murray's fine story-telling skills 4) Grandma R waterskiing!

some more photos...

Here are a few more photos for your enjoyment...I can't always control the order in which they appear, but here are the descriptors to liven up your viewing:

1) Sunscreen on the head equals...CRAZY hair! Little B with spikes galore. We're guessing he'll have tons of super thick hair once he hits 2 , as his hair has followed the pattern of Kdee.

2) Most of Kdee's T-ball team at their last game...what a crew!

3) ribB, Kdee and little B getting the water balloons ready for the birthday party. Check out little B with the hose--he's crazy about water (and Kdee is still a bit apprehensive about water in her eyes!).

4) This pic makes ribB so proud...his little "Princess for the Day". Yes, Kdee thought it'd be funny to make little B a queen. We know some queens who'd be impressed with our open-minded parenting :-).

Have a great week!

Gift wrap, cupcakes and BONZAI FALLS!

Whew! The ribclan household is coming off of a thrilling (and tiring!) weekend of birthday party fun for little Ms. Kdee. On Saturday we had her "friend party", where 10 children came over to the ribclan house for lots of water fun, for 3 hours. Needless to say, our prepping work for the party began early in the week, with ribB constantly watering our lawn so that it wasn't a dry, icky playground and me organizing party goods/cleaning the house. Kdee even helped with some of the prep work, which was a pleasant surprise. (On a side note, I think she's been on another growth spurt lately because she seems to be wavering between mature/immature on an every-other-minute basis (which can be trying for mom/dad!). She's also been waking up at 4am with various excuses like "I'm hungry", etc. which isn't normal for her, but seems to correct itself after a couple of nights. Overall, her behaviors usually seem to balance out after a few weeks once her growth spurt is over...always to our happiness!)

The morning of her party, the weather was a bit cloudy and windy...not the elements for a good outdoor fun day. But, by noon, the skies miraculously cleared and the weather got hot and humid--perfect! We raced around all morning/afternoon and finished our party prep a good 2 minutes before the kids came (such as: feeding little B lunch while assembling gift bags and figuring out a shower/get dressed routine!). It was a blast to see Kdee light up when she saw her school friends again. It was also awesome to have her 2 future husbands, Evan and James, in attendance (both go to other schools; as you may know, Evan is her life-long friend whose mom(JoAnne) works with ribB; James is a long-time friend from her daycare). And, if you haven't heard me mention these 2 boys before--yes, she does refer to them as the boys she might marry.

Once they arrived, they all ran off and immediately started playing in the small blow-up pool and slip-n-slide while ribB got the rented "BONZAI FALLS" inflatiable water slide ready. As you can imagine, the waterslide was the biggest hit. The kids played and played, and even got to have a water balloon "fight". When they started to get a little tired, we did the ever-popular "decorate your own cupcake". With vanilla cupcakes, frosting galore and sprinkles at their disposal, everyone decorated their masterpiece cupcake. This event was a huge hit at last year's party (and highly requested by Kdee for this year). The difference between last year and this year was...the skill level. Last year, I barely had any frosting or sprinkles left over. With last year in mind, I thought I'd be tricky and stretch out my frosting with Cool Whip (a "semi- homemade" trick by Sandra Lee) and, boy, it wasn't necessary. This year, the kids really took their time and were much more meticulous about their creations. Even the "frosting horder" boys didn't nearly eat as much frosting as before! Of course, I'm certainly not disappointed about having extra frosting on hand :-)! Overall, the party was a big success. The kids all played really well together and we didn't run into too many problems with hurt feelings, etc. Kdee received some wonderful gifts (Sky Dancers were the very popular, very exciting gift) and all children were properly tired/sugared out by the end of the party. (Note to folks holding future kid parties: don't get red vines. The kids repeatedly said they were "gross" and asked "what flavor is THISSSS?"; also, make sure to have a constant plan of activity--kids this age will call for mutiny any chance they can!) After most kids left, Evan was able to stay/play and have dinner with us, along with his mom. It was great, and I really appreciated the chance to catch up with JoAnne.

On Sunday, Kdee had her friend Kirsten over and played some more on the BONZAI FALLS. They played all afternoon, mostly outside in the water again, but they also enjoyed some Barbie (Mermaidia)/dress up/etc. time as well. One thing that made me chuckle was watching them make "beds" to layout in the sun (to warm up after all the cold water play). They were quite cute. Later that night, we decided to go for a "deer drive" out of sheer need to entertain (and contain!) the kids "easily". We were so tired! They had fun being silly and looking for deer, and ribB and I enjoyed a chance to chat a bit/chill out.

Little B managed the weekend pretty well. He had a chance to enjoy lots of outside time and did well mingling around with all of our guests. The kids were all very sweet with him and mindful of him when he was around. Little B has always been better at entertaining himself/being content to wait more than Kdee at this age, which is helpful in times like having company.Prior to the party, he helped ribB while he filled water ballons--placing them into a small tub for ribB for storage until the party. It didn't take long, though, until he took over the hose and became one wet little monkey. He loves water, so this was a blast for him. At the party, little B was very interested in consuming as much watermelon as possible (as did the kids--althogether they ate almost an entire seedless watermelon!). He looked like a big, red juicy mess afterward--thank goodness he was in his swim trunks. Given the fun of our weekend, he wasn't too excited to go back to daycare on Monday (and gave ribB the "stare down"). But, as is his nature, he rolled with the change and eased back into having a great day with his friends at daycare. Another little B side note: he's still very excited by "deer" and has been looking for them constantly (including some hunting videos with ribB). Yesterday morning he got to see a doe in our yard, which was very fun. He's also talking up a storm--even requesting "tacos" last night for dinner. He's repeating everything!

Kaboom--it's Kdee's Birthday

What a wonderful 4th of July vacation we had up at the family cabin! The Ribclan enjoyed 5 days of awesome weather, fireworks galore (personal show plus many booming versions from neighbors), swimming, wine/blender drinks, birthday celebrations and lots of laughter. After time with our extended family and friends, we are reminded about how lucky we are to have such special people in our life, and an amazing place for all of us to come together--especially to celebrate Kdee's big 6th birthday!

Here are some fun highlights from the big weekend (along with many pictures):
--Our weekend was shared with ribB's Uncle Bob & Aunt Jan and their children Mike (his wife Becky, children L & Ncle) and Dana (her husband John, and children Mgn & Nck); we also enjoyed time with ribB's other uncle, Bart, Aunt Donna and their children A & C. Their life-long friends, Carl (aka Blender Boy) and Rose also joined in the fun along with their children J, K & A. Whew!

--To officially celebrate Kdee's birthday, we enjoyed cupcakes and opening presents on Tuesday. Grandma Honey & Paul were able to stop by on their way home from Paul's family celebration in a nearby town. We barely managed to squeeze the 6 candles on the cupcake (next year we're definitely back to a cake!), but the tight spacing also allowed for an easier "blow out" of said candles! Kdee received some really fun & thoughtful gifts from everyone there, and we are so grateful for the fun celebration that everyone took part in. (We also had a celebration at home on Wednesday--dinner out at her favorite restaurant at home, Kingdom Buffet, and opening more gifts back at home.)

--A big part of celebrating a fun summer birthday at the cabin is the swimming, which Kdee loves. She has really become quite the fish in the water. She has mastered swimming without a life jacket/floaties/etc. and even got more adventurous with being "thrown" and enjoying more of Bart/Donna's "launch pad" on the water. As one would expect, she was ready to be in the water almost every day at 8am! (Yes, all this swimming did lead to one really loooonnnnng nap on Monday.)

--Little B was also quite the water bug, loving every minute of swimming with dad/mom. He is not afraid of getting his face wet (quite the feat for a little one), as demonstrated by the multiple times he splashed and dipped his face into the water to blow into it. He also really loved being thrown up in the air by ribB, complete with a landing splash. We were amazed by his broad smile and belly laughs over that one!

--Kdee & Little B enjoyed fishing excursions with ribB. Little B got the chance to see a Northern up close...and was a bit apprehensive about it. Kdee and ribB got a chance to see Mike toss his pole in the water, and subsequently dive in for it. Whoops!

--Little B was constantly on the look-out for "deer!" and also loved chasing down "BOB!". He is pretty connected to both Bob and Bart, which is a hoot to watch. He is lucky to have 2 wonderful mentors and fun uncles.

--Kdee played on and on with her cousin M, who is 4. They really did well together (very minor moments of dischord) and played many rounds of Polly Pockets, baby dolls, swimming and "music concerts". She also enjoyed time with cousin L, who's 3. We absolutely love having cousins the same age as our children...it's so fun to watch them develop such nice friendships (as was the case with ribB and his cousins, especially M's mom, Dana. On a funny side-note, AndiR once thought that Dana was ribB's girlfriend because she always sat next to him in our Poli Sci lecture (they were actually taking turns sleeping/taking notes for each other).

--On Sunday afternoon/night, we enjoyed a festive time at Bart & Donna's cabin. Bart & AndiR enjoyed lots of our "favorite wine" and blender boy, wearing his new official "blender boy" t-shirt, was busily keeping our glasses filled. As you may suspect, Carl has acquired this name by experimenting with Bart/Donna's cabin blender and various alcohols. Yes, many are interesting. Yes, some are not so good. Yes, some are highly approved. You never know what you'll get, he just makes it up as he goes! Blender Boy also has a NA side to him, making the kids many fun NA drinks like Root Beer Freezes. We always laugh a lot with Blender Boy & Rose, so it's a treat to have time with them and hear the crazy stories from the long friendship they have had with our family.

--ribB, John and Bob put on another fabulous fireworks display, on Monday night. All of the tired kids were troopers and stayed up late to watch the well done show. After 3 years, the boys are definitely getting the timing and coordination of fireworks down to a science. As always, the barking balls were a favorite...conversation piece! :-)

--We all enjoyed seeing cabin neighbors and lifelong ribclan family friends, "Cookie" and Louie. This couple is nothing short of amazing. At 80, they kayak the lake everyday, busily attend to their cabin, fish, walk, drive around the country seeing their kids...you name it, they do it. They inspire us as great role models for aging and enjoying life to its fullest.

--We made the most of our last day by leaving late--8pm. Not only did that allow for some late swimming, but we also got to see some fun fireworks on the way home. We pulled over to watch the Stillwater fireworks, which are notoriously the area's best. We're used to watching them out on our boat (as they're shot over the river), but they were still absolutely awesome from where we were. Both of the kids fell asleep 1 hr before we came upon them, and there was no waking them up. I tried SO HARD to get Kdee to even open an eye, but it was all in vain. They both slept through them and ribB & myself enjoyed a peaceful fireworks show...always a treat.

Our week back to work & life as we know it has been a slow, tired adjustment. Kdee had her last t-ball game last night, which went pretty well. Little B has been out of sorts--either sick or teething, we're not sure. He actually got sick for the first time at Kdee's t-ball game (over my leg, mind you!). He's had a mixed bag of symptoms over the last day, but seemed well enough today to go to daycare (cross your fingers!). Tomorrow is Kdee's friend party, which she is really excited about. We will have around 10 children at our house, playing outside with lots of water-related fun. Slip-n-slide, giant inflatible waterslide (rented from ribB's co-worker), pool and water balloons. It is our goal to wear out each and every child so all parents will have a peaceful night! We're always amazed at how much work & energy it takes to pull off a birthday party, but it is so much fun to see Kdee with her friends, it's well worth it.

Support Debbie (McKenzie) Hoople

Life is certainly precious--and uncertain. This truth has been shockingly proven all too true with the recent accident of a friend. Back in the days of SCF High, Debbie McKenzie was a couple of years younger than me and I knew her through "hellos", sports--the usual. In recent years, we bumped into each other on the playgrounds in our hometown and discovered we each had daughters the same age, and we'd then see each other at Church. This past year, her daughter was in the same classroom as Kdee and needless to say, we had opportunities to spend time together at many events. Sadly, only a few days after school was done for the summer, Debbie and her 3 children were in a horrific car accident where she sustained serious injuries and has been in the ICU at Regions Hospital (St. Paul). Luckily, her children only received minor injuries, but Debbie was thrown from the vehicle. Debbie is a work-from-home mom (she's a Mary Kay consultant), and needless to say, there is a lot for this family to restructure during her hospital stay and long recovery (which she is expected to recover, just with a lot of time). Her husband, Cal, is amazing--as are her children and extended family. As you'd expect, the family is acquiring many medical bills throughout these first weeks, plus the girls will now need to start going to daycare. To help with these unexpected costs, Cal's sisters will be doing a "fundraiser" by selling Debbie's Mary Kay inventory. You can either come to the event (as outlined below) or order online at: www.marykay.com/debhoople. Please share this information with anyone you know who uses Mary Kay or enjoys make up! Never before has buying girly stuff been so honorable or good, so enjoy shopping and know it is greatly appreciated by her family. (Don't forget about presents for others!!!)

You can learn more about Debbie's condition at: www.caringbridge.org (sign in: debbiehoople1)
Here's more info on the "fundraiser":
As most of you know Debbie is a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant and currently going to be a Mary Kay Sales Director. Unfortunately Debbie has a lot of Mary Kay product at her house that needs to be sold. So to help her and her family out there will be an open house at Cal and Debbie's on Friday July 7th (4 pm -7 pm), Saturday July 8th (10 am - 6 pm), Sunday July 9th (1 pm - 4 pm) and by appointment to sell her existing Mary Kay inventory. All proceeds will be going towards Debbie's business and medical bills. Please contact Danea Hamholm at (715) 563-2315 if you have any questions or concerns, or are unable to attend but would like to order. Orders can also be placed by visiting www.marykay.com/debrahoople - This is a great way to help Debbie in her time of need and show her our support and love. Thank you and God bless.
